Seychelles which is an independent island chain in the Indian Ocean, has a distinct kind of music. The music of the Seychelles has African, Madagascan, and European roots and is played on percussion instruments, such as the drums and the tomtom, and on basic stringed instruments. Foreign influences were responsible for introducing the violin and the guitar to the region, both of which now play a significant part in its music.
The traditional dance of the Seychelles is the Moutia, which is accompanied by singing and has an African or Madagascan rhythm. Music and dance have always played a major role in the culture of the Seychelles and are still an important part of local festivities. The most popular dance is the Sega, with its characteristic swaying of the hips, though the traditional Moutia, a mysterious, erotic dance that dates back to the days of slavery when the African slaves saw it as a rare opportunity to express their discontent, is also still popular. The Kanmtole is a classical dance imported from foreign shores, accompanied by banjos, an accordion, and a violin, making it reminiscent of both the Scottish square dance and the Contredanse of the French Royal Court. The growth of Seychelles music has since seen the adoption of a blend of contemporary reggae and mainstream, international popular music such as hip-hop, country and west, ballad and even classic rock.
